They tell me spring is here, and I almost believed it, until we got a bunch of snow... but what can you do, it's weather! The light is different though, and everything is starting to wake up from the long winter nap (including me).
Actually, the maples have been waking for awhile now, shipping sap up up up.
On St. Paddy's Day, mom and dad took us out to their neighbour's Sugar Woods to see maple syrup production in action.
Each tree is tapped with a tube, connecting it to a system that pumps the sap to the Sugar Shack.
The sap is clear, not that sweet and only slightly thicker than water.
Anthony keeps the wood fire burning for 16 hours per day, cooking down the sap to make syrup.

We had a flurry of summer bookings for the Airbnb once I opened up the summer dates, but nothing yet for our so-called "shoulder season" (April-June), so we have a break from that. We still haven't firmed up our summer plans, but unless things go totally awry, we expect to get in a trip to Edmonton this year. It could be any time from June to September. We still don't have enough information to book flights, but hopefully soon...
Part of me feels crazy trying to make plans that are still 3-6 months out, but I'm certain that's just a symptom of the past couple of years with all of its uncertainty, and many rugs pulled out from underfoot. Are you making any concrete plans yet? What are you most looking forward to?

I spent a lot of time reading books this month. I seem to ebb and flow a lot with my various leisure activities, and reading seems to have taken the top spot lately. It's born of a desire to spend less time consuming quick takes online, and more time with fiction and other texts that have different contexts and take longer to create. I dip my toes into news/current events once a day or so and spend the rest of my time elsewhere. I'm currently reading:
1. Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel, a novel set after a global pandemic causes the collapse of civilization... (too soon? but it was published in 2014!). I hear there's now a tv show based on it, but I have to read the book first. It's got actors and Shakespeare in it, so I'm into it.
2. How to be Perfect by Michael Schur (creator of the tv show The Good Life), a humorous book about moral philosophy, which I am also pretty into.
3. Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake (what a great name!), a book about the wonders of fungi, which I LOVE 🍄
We are also watching BBC Earth's The Green Planet and it is SO GOOD. I am in awe of the camera work. It's incredible and gives us humans a chance to get a glimpse of the plant time scale. Watch beautiful and exciting plant stories! Fall in love with life!
With the general improvements in the weather and warmer temperatures we've been spending a bit more time outside. Last weekend we went out for a double-feature: Beach stroll + Forest bath. We walked back and forth on the beautiful stretch of Gulf Shore Beach (sea glass! sand! waves!) and then traipsed through the Pugwash River Estuary trail (trees! moss! mushrooms!).

I guess that's it for this month. If you haven't reached out lately to say hi (or even if you have), why not hit reply and tell me something good?
