A Love Letter,

From the desk of Marsha Amanova

April 2022

Hello! I hope you've had an awesome April.

I suppose I should start with the most interesting thing that happened this month: our band performed at our first open stage, which led to us getting booked for a gig in June! And then a week later we filled in and played our first paid gig! What?!

As you may know, Aldon and I have been playing music with my dad. We practice most Sundays when we go for our weekly visit and dinner. So, on the first Sunday of the month, dad suggests we pick some songs and go to the Wednesday night Bordertown Jam in Amherst. Well, we had been bottling wine all day and it sounded like a great idea! 🍷😂

But seriously, we had a blast and I wrote about it here:

So yes, the Bordertown Jam was fun and we were well received. Time to learn more songs so we're ready to play a full Saturday show in June!

...and then a few days later dad gets a call from the guy who organizes it all, and he's wondering if we might be able to play for an hour in one week - one of the groups who was scheduled has COVID and can't perform. Uh...yes, sure, we'll be there!

We decided we better get a bit more practice performing on the stage and plan to go back to the Jam the following Wednesday. And then on Tuesday dad gets another call from the guy, "Would Aldon possibly be willing to play drums with the band this week? Our regular drummer is out with COVID..." Uh...yes, sure, he'd love to fill in! So we all head back to the mall, and Aldon played drums with the band for 3 solid hours. Dad and I joined them for the last few songs of the night (they didn't call us up until the end), which was a bit rushed because the show ran past the 9pm deadline... The local radio station recorded the evening to play on the weekend, here's a little soundbite of Two +1 with a full band.

Oh right, I almost forgot, halfway through the Jam the guy comes up to dad and says, "so... the second group we had for Saturday has also cancelled due to COVID, is there any chance Two +1 can play a full show?" 🤣

I'm sure you're not surprised to hear that we agreed. We played 2 x ~45minute sets on Saturday April 16th at the Amherst Mall. Literally less than two weeks after deciding to go to an open stage. I think we did quite well, but there's still plenty of room for improvement, and we're looking forward to having another go in June. I really hate to say this, but if you're interested, you may like to follow us on Facebook (*cringe*). Or you can get a peek of some video clips in this YouTube Playlist (Subscribe?).

Music wasn't everything this month, but it did take up a great deal of energy and focus. I was looking back over my photos for the month to see what else we got up to, and found that we had some really incredible sunsets in April. I'm still in awe of the beauty of this place we get to call home these days!

Aldon and I explored a few new places nearby, and we went to a mushroom workshop to inoculate a couple of logs with shitake mushrooms that, if we're lucky, might grow this fall!

Easter weekend is when we played our gig, and did I mention that my mom won both the door prize (a giant chocolate cowboy bunny) AND the 50/50?! Actually mom made more cash from that gig than I did 😂 I said we were paid, I didn't say we were paid well!

The birds and buds are back in town (and we saw our first bee this week)! I love the cheerful crocuses and daffodils. The tulips are still working their way up and out.
