A Love Letter,

From the desk of Marsha Amanova

September 2022

Hello from Hurricane-Fiona-ravaged Nova Scotia!

You may be wondering how we weathered the (post-tropical) storm last weekend. I'm happy to report that we're fine. Trees and roofs are not, but we're grateful that our leaks were minor, we have no damage in our flat (the big spruce tree that fell narrowly missed our roof and the heat pump), the damage to the building has been temporarily patched, and we got our power restored in 3 days! Which is a lot quicker than many (some, including my parents, are still waiting).

We're mourning the many trees that were downed, but are so grateful that our people are all fine. The beach below our property is a mess with all of the debris from the storm washed right up to the base of our stairs, and yet somehow, we still got a beautiful calm evening and sunset after the storm passed.

Our trip to Alberta was fantastic! Highlights for me were the wedding, re-connecting with family, visiting with friends, our trip to the mountains, and playing D&D in person!
The wedding (week)end was a complete whirlwind, And HOT! We camped in tents on the grounds, and the event seemed more like a big hall party than a traditional wedding. So many people pitched in to help. The ceremony was short and sweet with personal vows (made official by a friend). Aldon was the MC/DJ and sang with the band (Fabulous Beefeeders Reunion)! He & I also sang a little John Prine song in lieu of a toast. It was everything I would hope for on a day to celebrate love: family, friends (old & new), food, fun, and lots of music & dancing ❤️

As the weekend wrapped up we started to notice the smoke and heard about forest fires near Jasper. We worried that we might need to cancel our trip to the mountains, but then learned that the Miette Hot Springs area was unaffected. The weather was perfect for soaking, and it really was the ideal way to relax and rejuvenate after the madness of the long weekend. It's always been a special place for Aldon's family, especially his mom, and we're so grateful to her for taking us back. I've always felt like I truly joined Aldon's family when I first stayed with them at Miette all those years ago.

Support Indigenous Makers

Have you heard of Indigenous Box? I had an opportunity to briefly chat with the CEO and founder, Mallory (who was at the wedding), about her work with Indigenous Entrepreneurs, and I found her so inspiring that I promptly signed us up for a yearly subscription.

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. We recognize the tragic legacy of residential schools, and remember and honour the missing children, the families left behind, and the survivors of these institutions.

If you find yourself looking for a special gift for someone (or for yourself!) now or in the future, I encourage you to check out Indigenous Box.

(this is not a sponsored message or ad, I just think it's an amazing project to support and I feel inspired to share it here!)
